My kids in Japan, I miss them

Foreground Mami, On Stage Kenji

Mami and Kenji on bikes

Yumi at Japanese Preschool

I thank God for the ability to send my kids and wife Wakayo to Japan every year. I know how hard it is to live in a foreign country and not go back home once in a while. Besides, I want my kids to grow up citizens of the world and not of just Houston, Texas. This opens their horizons.

Convert Real Media Library to MP3 if you have linux

Linux has a bunch of benefits, but one very powerful benefit is the ability to convert file formats with very powerful software that you can install for free.

If you have linux, and you have access to a library of files in the Real Media format which you'd like to get into MP3 so you can get it on your iPod or MP3 player, then this is the way to do it:

1. go to the folder you are keeping these files in
2. get all ram files from the web library with DownThemAll firefox extension
3. for file in `ls`; do wget `cat $file | tr -d '\015'` ; done
    -  This is how you download the contents of the .ram files you got with DownThemAll which sometimes have the \015 or 0d character at the end of the url which we are taking off with tr -d '\015'
4. for i in `ls *.r[a,m]`; do mplayer $i -ao pcm:file=$i.wav ; done
    -  This converts the files in that directory from rm or ra to .wav files.  If you don't have mplayer installed you will need to install this package first.
5. for i in `ls *.wav`; do lame -f $i $i.mp3 ; done
    -  This converts .wav files to mp3 files.  Again if you don't have lame installed, you will need to use your package manager to install it first.

Of course, those without linux will cry unfair because they cannot do these things.  Get a copy of Ubuntu and burn it to cd and install Ubuntu on an old computer you aren't using now.

Of course, others will ask why someone hasn't made a gui that can do this.  Of course, that is easy to do, but it is just as easy for you to learn how to do the above steps.

If you really want me to make a gui that will do this for your linux computer, it is possible for the right price.

The AC Rep Convention and The Mindset Mentoring Conference

Gang,

If you missed the convention, you missed alot.  I was blessed hearing Alan a millionaire alum and his partner Bill Bates a former Dallas Cowboy.  Doug Firebaugh was a HUGE blessing and I pray that Jerry Rasamni's message of our God of Love for Muslims around the world is heard by millions.  In fact, Mr. Rasamni's book should be required reading by muslims in prison.

This morning so far has been a tear jerker.  And, the early bird lunch with Tim and some millionaires was also great.

Make up your mind to believe that you will attend the next one.

I found this free service that lists free wi-fi hotspots by zip code and address. You have got to bookmark this post or the page so that you can get back to it when planning impromptu meetings where you need wi-fi to close the deal.

Birds in the back yard

This year we decided to get a cheap bird feeder and hope that some birds would come. Apparently we are the only feeder in the neighborhood because when there is feed in the feeder the whole neighborhood's birds come.

Today I took some pictures. You will see a red headed female woodpecker in one and a full house of four feeders in the next one.

I hope the pictures come through clear.

Here is something I was reading to my kids tonight

I thought this reading from Jesus Wants All of Me, Smouse, was very appropriate to our business lives:

Ship Ahoy!

My life is like a little boat anchored in the harbor.  The water is calm and smooth.  The breeze is gentle and warm.  And, I am safe.  But I cannot stay here forever.  God wants me to launch out into the wild, open water, to ride the mighty, crashing waves.  He wants me to let go.  He wants me to trust Him and follow Him wherever He may go.

"If you know these things, happy are you if you do them."
John 13:17

You haven't been give the gifts you have been given just for you.  God blessed you with forgiveness, wealth, business, life, love, friends, family, and success so that He can get it through you to someone else.  How do you do that?  You can do it stuck at harbor.  You have to get out there and mix it up.  You have to do them.

Stop grumbling about what you don't have yet and use what has been given to you already.  Are you surprised that more don't find success?  Not me.  It is only those who figure out that success is for those who "do it" and persevere in "doing it" and not for those safe at harbor with sails furled.

Instead, be grateful for everything.  List all the things you have to be grateful about.  Then chose to be grateful for even those things that others wouldn't chose to be grateful about.  Unfurl those sails.  Risk bumping into other ships and stumbling into uncharted waters.  You only have this life.

Tip 78 - Meeting people you don't like
-------------------------------------------------------

Recently I was playing polo (my new favorite pastime), and a new person was introduced to our regular group. The first impression I got was that he was pretty inauthentic, even untruthful about a few things, and it was a definite put-off.

When you meet someone you don't like, you've got two choices. Become annoyed at having to deal with the new person. Or step back and realize that usually when people act like that, it's because of some insecurity and their defense mechanisms are kicking in to protect from being hurt.

Initially, I reacted the wrong way. I'm human. But luckily, when it was obvious I was pretty tweaked, a good friend who's also part of my accountability group called me on my behavior.

Then I remembered the advice a friend once gave me about how to handle these situations. Do the opposite of your initial reaction. So if I started to push back and be defensive and gruff myself, I actually should choose to be positive and very affirming to help create a comfortable, safe environment for the person I didn't like so much at first, to give them the best opportunity to demonstrate the good they probably really have inside.

Even in these relatively brief relationship situations, it pays to focus on generosity and helping others. And in the end, that's the best way to help yourself, too.

Read some great comments on this and post your own at the Never Eat Alone blog

STOP IT NOW!

Stop typing an internet address in the search bar.

Every month a billion new pages are created. Maybe that isn't the right number but it is just as unbelievably huge.

If that is the case, then why do you think you are going to find the site you are looking for using search?

If you have been told to go to http://www.crusaderx.com then put that into the address bar and go there. You are wasting time putting it into the search bar.

Yet, 95% of all the people I know do just that. If they are told to go to businessconferences.info then they put their cursor into the search bar or they go to their favorite search engine and search for BusinessConferences.info . BIG mistake.

It is going to continue to get more and more impossible for search engines to find crusaderx.blogspot.com so don't search for it. You know it so just go there.

While we are talking about that something else bothers me.

Stop typing http://www. before every address. Your computer knows how to figure that out. So, just select all of the text in the address bar and then without doing anything else like pressing delete just go ahead and type the domain like linkedin.com/in/ericstandlee into the address bar so it looks just like that without the http://www. Then just hit enter.

IT WILL WORK. TRUST ME.

Fwd: Audacious Faith

This was forwarded from a very close friend and I thought it perfect for us.
---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: Dan Miller -- 48 Days
1. Audacious Faith
We have had an abundance of unusual birds at our house in the last couple of weeks. A Baltimore Oriole and a Rose-Breasted Grosbeak have attempted to come in my office window. I always stop to watch, listen and learn.

My favorite is still the eagle. In both the Hebrew and Christian faiths the eagle represents the flight of the soul to heaven. It is the symbol of faith the connection with the seen and the unseen. With any growth or change, there comes the inevitable time when a step of faith is required. The greatest of miracles is that we need not be tomorrow what we are today, but we can improve if we make use of the potentials implanted in us by God. Rabbi Samuel M. Silver

Remember in the movie Raiders of the Lost Ark The Last Crusade, Harrison Ford comes to that impassable chasm. Yet the goal was on the other side and he had clearly been led to this point. With heart pounding and sweat beads breaking out all over his body, he closed his eyes to numb the uncertainty and anticipated crash to the rocks below, but still stepped out and the path appeared. He knew he was on the right path, but a bold step of faith was required in order for him to continue. In every worthwhile personal or business venture, there comes the time of that required step of faith. Those things clearly predictable are not likely notable. Real success blends faith and reason.

Interviewing for a new job, negotiating for a raise or starting a business all require that step of faith. But without moving into new territory we will never experience anything better than where we are now.

The eagle goes where no other bird goes. It embraces storms as leverage to go higher not as an excuse to cower in fear. Fear of failure paralyzes action. Confidence is learned by taking specific action. To think confidently, act confidently. Plan to win prepare to win expect to win.

"For God hath not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." II Tim. 1:7

Google keeps tweaking its search engine | CNET News.com

You WANT to understand search engines and how they decide which sites get to the top of a search. This article is eye opening.
Google keeps tweaking its search engine | CNET News.com: "But at its core, Google remains a search engine. And its search pages, blue hyperlinks set against a bland, white background, have made it the most visited, most profitable and arguably the most powerful company on the Internet. Google is the homework helper, navigator and yellow pages for half a billion users, able to find the most improbable needles in the world's largest haystack of information in just the blink of an eye.

Yet however easy it is to wax poetic about the modern-day miracle of Google, the site is also among the world's biggest teases. Millions of times a day, users click away from Google, disappointed that they couldn't find the hotel, the recipe or the background of that hot guy. Google often finds what users want, but it doesn't always."
